Project Management Director in Boston, MA

This position provides leadership, vision and direction for the IT Project Management Office. The Director has hands-on leadership experience within a Fortune 500 Project Management Office. A primary focus is implementing holistic, IT-wide practices and tools surrounding the discipline of project management. Another key position focus is working cross-organizationally to staff and execute our projects and to provide accurate project status across the entire IT portfolio. PMO

. The scope of the work outlines
. Define and implement a strategic direction for the IT Project Management Office. This includes:
. Determining the mission and charter of the office
. Defining & implementing project management processes
. Maturing and scaling our project execution practices to ensure that projects achieve the expected business value.
. Defining a tool strategy that enables project management productivity & effectiveness
. Partnering with all IT organizations to advance the maturity of the IT organization as a whole
. Oversee project activities (initiation through closing) across assigned project portfolios to achieve the expected business value. This includes:
. Ensuring solid practices are utilized on all projects covering areas such as scope management, risk management, time management, communications, financial management, scheduling and governance
. Establishing a project team structure appropriate for each project. Lead staffing activities
. Establishing effective partnership relationships with all project stakeholders
. Establishing and executing delivery assurance functions to identify and assist troubled projects
. Lead the project management team. This includes:
. Providing clear direction for Team Members and manages their performance in accordance with company performance management guidelines
. Defining and executing a talent development strategy for project managers
. Develop and manage the PMO department budget
. Educate the IT organization and key business unit partners on project management practices through ongoing communication of office mission and activities
. Understanding of company products / services, the company business unit structure and the IT service offerings and applications.
. Willing to assume responsibility and ownership for making critical decision recommendations related to executing projects successfully and advancing the project management discipline within the company
. Strong organization, communication, and facilitation skills. Able to interact cross organizationally to support the introduction and execution of project management practices.
. Process oriented; able to create and implement practices that govern the IT project management discipline.
. Project Management experience (minimum 10 years) with PMP certification
. Experience leading and directing all aspects of an IT organization. This includes managing personnel, developing and administering budgets and defining organizational practices. (minimum 7 years)
. Extensive organization, communication, and facilitation skills - able to interact credibly with executive management
. Project Management Office experience in a Fortune 500 company preferred
. Familiarity with Project Portfolio Management (PPM) tools such as CA Clarity, or Microsoft Project Server, Microsoft PPM, or Primevera is a plus
. Leads and manages the IT Project Management Office / organization
. Ability to instill trust, motivate, and work with other people
. Influences corporate governance practices affecting IT
. Ability to effect cultural change within the IT organization (implementing a central project management office requires cultural changes to succeed)
. Problem solving surrounding the introduction of a new discipline and practices within an established organization.
. Problem solving surround assessing in-flight project execution results to proactively prevent or analyzing the CLIENT IT project portfolio, spotting trends and analyzing options for solving portfolio issues such as resource constraints.
. Ensures assigned project portfolios deliver expected business value. The projects we run drive revenue increases, increase operational efficiency, keep our services running and transform the business.
. Fuels the company's growing need for project management services by maturing our project management practices
. Business unit project business value delivery
. Participates in corporate governance structures involving IT

. Ability to create and deliver executive-level summary reports and presentations.
. Ability to instill trust, motivate, and work with other people
. Ability to introduce and influence change into established organizational cultures
. Negotiation and conflict resolution skills; ability to create an open environment where conflicts related to project priorities and funding decisions can be aired and resolved in an objective manner
A. Travel Requirements:
Overnight travel: 15%




Experience: This position requires past experience BUILDING a PMO from scratch and proven experience managing multiple sites ( PMO's) and large amounts of staff. Experience working from an enterprise platform, with an intricate understanding of effecting cultural change throughout an organisation is KEY. This is not a C-Level role, but a position seeking a seasoned Director field level candidate with the zeal for implementiing, inititiating and driving PMO's from an IT perspective. A strong knowledge in IT is a plus with an accompanying 4 yr degree.
