Position Summary:

The Data Center Operations Engineer is responsible for daily activities pertaining to the operation of the Millennium data center including backup/restores, change and configuration management activities, and facilities coordination. This role will involve a combination of self-directed work as well as close collaboration with colleagues in IT and Facilities to ensure the effective operation of the data center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The backup/restore responsibilities of this role involve to the execution of enterprise tape backup/restore operations, support, and trouble resolution of the tape automated system. This position is responsible for the execution and monitoring of automated and/or manual tape backup and data restorations using Veritas Netbackup software. Functional activities include starting and ensuring success of scheduled backup jobs, trouble resolution of failed backup jobs and restoration of data as required as well as rotating tapes off site for secure storage.

The facilities coordination responsibilities of this role involve collaborating with representatives from the Facilities department regarding climate control, power management, and physical access. The engineer will provide capacity planning data to colleagues and management for periodic reports on power, cooling, and space utilization. The engineer will also provide pro-active monitoring of facilities thresholds. The engineer must be cognizant of and observe industry safety practices and Millennium procedures.

The change and configuration management responsibilities of this role involve collaborating with other IT functional groups and engineers on the execution and documentation of maintenance activities, resolution of relevant service interruptions, and implementation of new systems. The engineer will maintain the inventory of all installed computing components in the data center. The engineer coordinates and schedules planned facilities activities.

It is important for the engineer to keep colleagues and management aware of data center concerns and work with the appropriate constituents to anticipate needs and recommend solutions. The Data Center Operations Engineer must be available to respond to site emergencies in an on-call basis. Additionally the engineer must be available during scheduled maintenance events. The engineer will work on other projects and assignments as operational demands change.

Qualifications:

Must have 3-5 years prior experience working with IT operations
Experience with operating systems (Windows and UNIX/Linux) and file system management
Proficient at creating and following technical documentation
Must be highly organized and committed to succeed
Strong problem solving and decision making skills
Prior experience with Veritas NetBackup or related software required
Minimal exposure to local area networking, file/print services, and server support
Ability to identify basic components of the hardware architecture and infrastructure
Responsiveness and a sense of urgency in regard to problem resolution
Proven project participation skills, organizational skills, and time management skills
Highly dependable with sensitive and critical infrastructure components
